Featured Farms

Farming has always played a large role in the lives of Vermonters, but today it faces more pressure than ever before and much of the state's quiet country landscape is in danger.

In the late 1700's Vermont was filled with self-sufficient farmers, consuming everything they grew on their land. Then sheep were introduced and became a major source of income until the Civil War when dairy cows began to take prominence. Milk and dairy products have since been the state's signature, recently accounting for as much as 79% of Vermont's annual agriculture revenues.

But farming in Vermont is changing. There are fewer and fewer farms and less and less of the land in the state is used for agriculture. Rising land prices and taxes have lead to residential development of many of Vermont's farms. The ones that have survived hold the prime farmland or have diversified into beef cattle, pigs, turkeys, eggs, apples, honey and maple syrup. The brightest change recently has come from young Vermonter farmers creating artisan cheeses, craft breweries, high-quality organic fruits and vegetables, and more.

Snow Farm WInery

South Hero

Snow Farm Winery and Vineyard began as a dream in 1996 – to preserve Vermont’s agricultural land in the face of rapid development by providing an alternative for farmers. The location, on an island in the middle of Lake Champlain permits them to grow cooler climate vinifera grapes, Pinot Noir and Riesling, as well as the more cold hardy French Hybrids, Vidal Blanc and Baco Noir. Thanks to Vermont’s cold winter temperatures, Snow Farm also produces an ice wine, a product that cannot be made in many other places in the world.

Hall Home Place

Isle la Motte

The cidery is located in the scenic Hall's Orchard of Isle La Motte. The property has been in the family since the late 1700's and different generations of Halls have been cultivating apples and pears since the orchard was started. From 1828 until 2005 when the matriarch of the family, Mina Hall, passed away these generations of Halls have lived in the family farm house. The house is one of the historic stone houses built by the Scottish stone mason, James Ritchie. The stone in the house was quarried on the island and ancient coral reef fossils can be found in them. In an effort to help keep the orchard in the family and operating successfully Steve and Carol Hall Stata began restoring the family farm house and in 2008 started a seasonal café. The Café is in a renovated carriage barn attached to the house. Building on the success of the café, in 2009 they decided to experiment with making ice cider. We made 3 different varieties, all of which were delicious. The response was immediate and we quickly sold everything we had produced and we began making plans for expansion. In 2010 we tripled production and added a fourth variety. 2011 found us tripling again and adding a fifth variety. Click here to visit their website.
