The award-winning bicycle event series Farm to Fork Fondo will include a stop in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley in 2018. 500 cyclists from throughout the country are expected to attend Farm to Fork Fondo – Shenandoah on May 19-20, 2018 at Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown, VA. The annual event will be organized by Wrenegade Sports of Burlington, VT.

“With hundreds of farms, beautiful pastoral landscapes, rich agricultural history, supportive rural communities, and tremendous support for the farm-to-table movement, the Shenandoah Valley is an ideal location for a Farm to Fork Fondo event,” says Wrenegade Sports founder and former professional cyclist Tyler Wren.

The event will include gourmet aid stations at several farms in the Shenandoah Valley region, known as the ‘Breadbasket of the Confederacy,’ where cyclists will sample chef-prepared food made from each farm’s ingredients. Course options for all abilities will range from 10 to 100 miles.

Belle Grove Plantation in Middletown will serve as the start-finish venue on May 20, and host a pre-ride ‘Meet the Farmers Dinner’ on May 19. “Belle Grove Plantation has been a working farm since the mid-1700s and preserving its agricultural past and supporting our current farming community is an important part of our mission,” said Kristen Laise, Executive Director of Belle Grove Plantation. “We are delighted to partner with Wrenegade Sports to introduce their participants to our beautiful Shenandoah Valley with Farm to Fork Fondo.”

Sports Virginia has supported Wrenegade Sports’ efforts to bring the Farm to Fork Fondo series to the state for the first time. “The Shenandoah Valley, as a top destination for agritourism visitors, is a natural fit for the Farm to Fork Fondo series with its abundance of farms, scenic beauty and many rural roads ideal for cycling,” said Sports Virginia National Sales Manager Joni Johnson.

Additional featured farms and local partners will be announced in coming months. Online registration will open in January, 2018, at FarmToForkFondo.com.

Farm to Fork Fondo - Maine Brings Hundreds of Cyclists to Wolfe's Neck Farm

Ben Demars

IMG_0372.JPG

More than 500 cyclists took to Maine’s local farms on August 27 as part of the critically acclaimed Farm to Fork Fondo series. The crowd, ranging from professional athletes to first-time riders, joined together to celebrate Maine’s abundance of farm fresh food and to enjoy Maine’s southern coast and sweeping views.

The Farm to Fork Fondo - Maine event, hosted at Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Freeport, featured aid stations at six local farms placed along three routes ranging in distance from 13 - 92 miles. Participants enjoyed local goods such as carrot cake cookies, vegetable crudite, zucchini feta bruschetta at each aid station. “I think this might be the only bike ride where I’m gaining calories rather than losing them.” said one participant between bites at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village, home to the only remaining Shaker community in the world. Like all Farm to Fork Fondo events, participants found a barbecue waiting for them at the finish line with food from all the partner farmers and live music from Half Moon Jug Band. Unlike other Farm to Fork Fondo events, the Maine event is the only ride that serves lobster and mussels, making it truly unique.

Farm to Fork Fondo - Maine was the fifth event of the series' busy summer season. Farm to Fork Fondo was founded by Tyler Wren in 2014 after a 13 year career as a professional cyclist. With his passion for fitness and healthy living, Wren has worked with sponsors and farmers alike to produce the events throughout the Northeast. The series aims to celebrate fitness and eating locally by combining food, fitness, and traveling into one unforgettable experience.

Since it’s start in 2014, Farm to Fork Fondo has received widespread attention for both its concept and its model execution. Hailed as a one of the best trips of 2017 by Outside Magazine and as a top destination by SELF Magazine, this has been the series’ busiest season yet with more than 2,800 riders . Two new locations, New York’s Finger Lakes and the Berkshires in Massachusetts, were added to the already brimming roster. “I was excited to add more locations,"said Farm to Fork Fondo founder and director, Tyler Wren, "but the Maine event has always been a highlight simply because it has so much to offer. It's the perfect place for an event like this."

Farm to Fork Fondo - Pennsylvania Post Ride

Ben Demars

More than 500 cyclists rode alongside the horse-drawn buggies of Amish Country on July 29 as a part of the Farm to Fork Fondo – Pennsylvania Dutch event. Dubbed a “party on wheels,” participants of the latest stop in the Farm to Fork Fondo series rode from farm to farm sampling local treats. Riders of Farm to Fork Fondo – Pennsylvania Dutch event ranged from age two to 74 with professional cyclists and amateur beginners riding in tandem (some participants did ride on tandem).

The event was part of the Farm to Fork Fondo series, a farm-to-table cycling series created by Tyler Wren 2014 after a 13 year career as a professional cyclist. The series holds 6 events throughout the Northeast, giving participants an unforgettable experience of fitness and food. This is the second year Pennsylvania Dutch Country has been a featured location of the Farm to Fork Fondo series. “Lancaster County, PA, is perfect for this type of event.” said Wren. ”With 6,000 farms, there’s an abundance of local food and the atmosphere is just so unique.”

This year’s event featured eight aid stations located at farms throughout Lancaster County, PA. Each aid station was equipped with fresh treats for the cyclists to try. “Amazing farm fresh food at every rest stop.” said Selene Yeager, a contributor to Bicycling Magazine. The Farm to Fork Fondo – Pennsylvania Dutch event is unique from other events in the series because of the traditional Amish farms scattered throughout the routes. “More animals per square mile than any ride I’ve ever done- and that’s saying something!”

Along with celebrating local food and cycling, the event also worked to give back to the local Lancaster community. Using a mix of donations from sponsors, participants, and raffle ticket sales, the event donated more than $2000 to local causes represented at the event by teams of volunteers.

Farm to Fork Fondo - Vermont Post Ride

Ben Demars

Picture this: a crowd of 400 people, each riding a bicycle through the winding roads of central Vermont. A mix of professional riders and layman enthusiasts, children and adults of all ages, a mass of colorful jerseys and smiling faces. This was the scene at the third annual Farm to Fork Fondo - Vermont event on July 16 in Pittsfield, VT.

Organized by Wrenegade Sports, the Farm to Fork Fondo series is the brainchild of professional cyclist Tyler Wren. The Farm to Fork Fondo - Vermont event drew in a crowd from all over the country to celebrate fitness and New England’s reputable food. Twenty two states along with 4 countries were represented within the crowd of 410 cyclists. “Having participants travel from as far as China to ride this event is incredible” said Wren.” Uniting people from diverse backgrounds through fitness and eating local has always been the goal and this event really highlights why I started this series.”

The event featured nine aid stations located at local farms where participants could sample treats grown, produced, and prepared locally. “The overall vibe of the event was so unique and incredibly positive.” said one participant after riding the 50 miles course. “Every ounce of positivity was greatly felt: the volunteers, the staff, the announcer, the farmers.” The noncompetitive event offered routes ranging from 12 to 93 miles to accommodate riders of different skill levels.

Along with connecting cyclists to farmers, the Farm to Fork Fondo - Vermont event also worked to give back to the community. The event raised more than $2500 to be donated to local organizations represented by teams of volunteers at the event. Donations from sponsors, participants, and raffle ticket sales were split between the teams through a volunteer competition in which participants voted on which team they liked best. For the third year in a row, the Stockbridge Historical Meeting House won the volunteer competition, taking home $1000 to be used to maintain the historic sanctuary.

While the Farm to Fork Fondo series won’t return to Vermont until next year, the series has three more events this summer in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Maine and Berkshires.

Farm to Fork Fondo - Finger Lakes Post Ride

Ben Demars

A huge crowd of cyclists visited the Finger Lakes Region for this year’s Farm to Fork Fondo - Finger Lakes event held on June 25 at Atwater Estate Winery. While this is the first year Farm to Fork Fondo has visited the Finger Lakes Region, the event drew a crowd of more than 400 participants from 19 states including Texas and Georgia along with riders traveling from Canada and Israel. “The Finger Lakes region has all the elements we look for when organizing these events.” said Tyler Wren, founder and director of the Farm to Fork Fondo Series, “It has a wide variety of farms, an engaging community, a great farm to table scene, and beautiful roads for riding.” Participants rode anywhere from 12 to 90 miles, sampling local wine, cheese, fruits and veggies along the way at seven aid stations located at local farms.

The mission of the Farm to Fork Fondo series is to celebrate fitness and local food. By combining cycling and the fresh food of the Finger Lakes region, Farm to Fork Fondo created the ultimate foodie experience. Having aid stations at the farms allowed participants to enjoy the scenic views of New York while learning about where their food comes. “Putting a spotlight on the farms demonstrates the importance of eating locally when you’re living a healthy lifestyle.” said Wren. At the end of the ride, participants joined together for a post ride barbecue featuring live music from the Pelotones and gourmet dishes made with locally sourced ingredients from each of the farms. “This dinner was outstanding in location, wine choices, food, and conversation.” said Rod Taylor, who rode the 50 mile Medio route.

On top of highlighting local farms, the Farm to Fork Fondo series also works to give back to the communities where each of its events are held. The Farm to Fork Fondo - Finger Lakes event gave back to the community by donating money to local causes represented by teams of volunteers. More than $2000 of donations from sponsors, participants, and the raffle ticket sales were donated to the volunteers teams.

Despite some cloudy skies, participants left the event with happy bellies and plans to return next year.

The event, which was hosted by Pennings Farm, featured aid stations at seven local farms where riders sampled the farms’ food. “We’re very happy to host the Farm to Fork Fondo.” Said Steve Pennings, owner of Pennings Farm. “Wrenegade Sports’ organization skills are second to none and we can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Along with uniting farmers and cyclists, the event aimed to give back to the community. “Part of our mission is to support our host communities and we were happy to highlight the great work the local organizations are doing.” said Tyler Wren, Founder and Director of the Farm to Fork Fondo series. Proceeds from the event’s pick-a-prize mega-raffle were donated to local causes through a volunteer team competition. Clubs and organizations from the community picked local causes and volunteered at each aid station giving cyclists water and food prepared by the farmers. At the finish line, participants voted which volunteer team cheered them on the most. This year, over $3,000 were donated to local causes. “We were thrilled to involve and benefit two additional community groups in this year’s Farm to Fork Fondo – Hudson Valley.” said Wren.  The volunteer competition cash prizes were raised through donations from both participant and sponsors along with raffle ticket sales. The Vernon Township Women’s Club won this year’s competition and received $900 to use in their efforts to impact the community in positive ways. The Vernon Township Women’s Club gives more than $2,400 in scholarship each year along with donating food and clothing to women and children in need. The Orange County Bicycling Club and The North Face store tied for second place, each winning $600. Since it's start in 2015, the  Farm to Fork Fondo – Hudson Valley event has donated more than $10,000 to Orange County.

The Farm to Fork Fondo has also had a large economic impact on Orange County in previous years. Last year’s event had an economic impact of more than $500,000 spent by participants in Orange County. This year’s event saw participants from 21 states and four countries including Morocco and Japan. While the economic impact of the event is not yet known, Wrenegade Sports and the Orange County Tourism Department are working together to publish a report on the impact this year's event had on Orange County’s economy.

Stages Cycling Sponsors Farm to Fork Fondo Segment Challenge

Ben Demars

Stages Cycling and Wrenegade Sports have partnered together to present the Farm to Fork Fondo Stages Segment Challenge and to publish educational training tips and tricks for cyclists.

Farm to Fork Fondo is a non-competitive cycling event series organized by Wrenegade Sports where riders of all levels come together to celebrate local farms and healthy living. The partnership with Stages Cycling will allow Farm to Fork Fondo participants to test their abilities at this year’s events and to improve their training throughout the year by using the training tips.

The Stages Segment Challenge features course segments of higher difficulty that requires riders to use the Ride With GPS app to test their abilities. “Achieving goals highlights the benefit of our products,” said Matt Pacocha, Global Marketing Director of Stages Cycling, “and that’s why we’re a proud sponsor of the Farm to Fork Fondo Segment Challenge.”  The challenge gives the Farm to Fork Fondo Series a competitive edge for those who choose to participate. The Ride With GPS app records a participant's time during the challenge. The times are then ranked and separated into six categories based on age and gender to see which riders were fastest. The male and female cyclists with the fastest times win the coveted Farm to Fork Fondo polka-chicken jersey by Pactimo. One participant of the Stages Segment Challenge at each event will be picked at random to win a Stages Cycling Power meter.

Stages Cycling and Wrenegade Sports are also collaborating to publish training plans and educational content on FarmToForkFondo.com that cyclists can use to improve their abilities. The tips and tricks will be written by Power Education Specialist Benjamin Sharp, who helped develop endurance programs for USA Cycling. “Stages’ dedication to setting and achieving goals aligns perfectly with Wrenegade Sports’ core mission to provide achievable challenges for athletes of all abilities,” said Tyler Wren, Founder of Wrenegade Sports and the Farm to Fork Fondo series. “We’re excited to work together both at this year’s events and on content that our participants can use year round.” Whether it’s to prepare for the Stages Segment Challenge or just to make the most of a ride, the training plans and tips can be used by anyone looking to improve.

To take part in the Stages Segment Challenge, cyclists may register for any of the six Farm to Fork Fondo events and download the Ride With GPS app.

PITTSFIELD, VT - Unique farm-to-table bicycling event, Farm to Fork Fondo – Vermont, will return to Riverside Farm in Pittsfield, July 15-16, 2017.

The event features gourmet aid stations on farms throughout Central Vermont with chef-prepared food made from each farm’s ingredients. The 2016 edition of Farm to Fork Fondo - Vermont drew nearly 500 cyclists to the region from more than 25 states, and highlighted 8 local farms.

The event generated an estimated $425,000 in local economic impact, and made over $3,000 in charitable contributions to local organizations, including The Stockbridge Historical Meeting House, Vermont Foodbank, Rutland Area Farm And Food Link, Vermont Farmers Food Center, The Agricultural Stewardship Association, and Ripton Community Church.

"One of our core goals is to encourage a richer mutual understanding between farmers and consumers, says Tyler Wren, Farm to Fork Fondo event director, and founder of Burlington-based Wrenegade Sports. "We want participants to appreciate Vermont's rural beauty, but also see firsthand where their food comes from, and give farmers a chance to feel better understood by the general public. Many of our participants live in urban areas, and this may be one of the only opportunities they have to meet the families who invest a lifetime in feeding the rest of us.

Riverside Farm will host a gourmet “Meet the Farmers Dinner” on Saturday July 15, and serve as the start-finish venue on July 16. “Riverside Farm is thrilled to be hosting Farm to Fork Fondo again in 2017,” said general manager Peter Borden. “It’s our favorite event of the summer. We love how it brings together and highlights our vendors like Vermont Farms Catering, our neighboring communities, local artisans and our farmer neighbors. Riverside is always excited to be a part of this special event.”

2017 routes, menus, and local farm partners will be confirmed in coming months, and online registration will open January 15, 2017.

Farm to Fork Fondo – Hudson Valley Returns in 2017 to Pennings Farm

Tyler Wren

Farm to Fork Fondo – Hudson Valley, a unique farm-to-table cycling event, will be returning to Pennings Farm in Warwick, New York on June 10-11, 2017.

The signature element of the event is a series of gourmet rest stops on farms throughout Orange County, in New York's lower Hudson Valley, which feature chef-prepared food made from each farm’s ingredients.

In 2016, Farm to Fork Fondo - Hudson Valley was hosted by Pennings Farm and drew nearly 600 participants from 24 states, and highlighted 8 area farms. The event also created an estimated $588,024 in total economic impact and contributed over $3,000 in donations to local community groups.

"Hudson Valley has become the premier stop of the Farm to Fork Fondo series," said event director Tyler Wren of Wrenegade Sports. "We're thankful for our strong local partnerships and are excited to continue to grow this event and to bring more participants and more national attention to this beautiful area."

“Farm to Fork Fondo has provided Orange County with a wonderful opportunity to showcase our agricultural community and given us an economic boost,” said Steven Neuhaus, Orange County Executive. “I know the 2017 event will be a success, and we all look forward to hosting the Farm to Fork Fondo again.”

Pennings Farm will host a gourmet 'Meet the Farmers Dinner' on Saturday June 10, and serve as the start-finish venue on June 11. “Warwick’s abundance of unique businesses, restaurants and farms like ours, and its proximity to New York City positions our county as a popular tourist destination,” said Steve Pennings, owner of Pennings Farm Market in Warwick, NY. “We’re excited to partner again with Wrenegade Sports to host the Farm to Fork Fondo in 2017 here at Pennings Farm Cidery, to show off our rural back roads and vast farmland, and act as a catalyst to spark economic growth.”

Updated 2017 routes, menus, and local farm partners will be confirmed in coming months, and online registration will open in January, 2017.

“A major goal of the Farm to Fork Fondo series is to provide opportunities for the cycling community to support and become better acquainted with the agricultural community. These farms are more than just gorgeous scenery. Connected to every beautiful barn are families doing work that is vital to our way of life, and we urge our participants to support local farmers wherever it is they call home,” said event founder, Tyler Wren.

“We are tremendously grateful for the cooperation of all of the communities along our course, and generous support from Wolfe’s Neck Farm and the dozens of local volunteers who helped make this year’s event a great success.”

Farm to Fork Fondo donated over $7,000 to to local farms and non-profit organizations.
