A huge crowd of cyclists visited the Finger Lakes Region for this year’s Farm to Fork Fondo - Finger Lakes event held on June 25 at Atwater Estate Winery. While this is the first year Farm to Fork Fondo has visited the Finger Lakes Region, the event drew a crowd of more than 400 participants from 19 states including Texas and Georgia along with riders traveling from Canada and Israel. “The Finger Lakes region has all the elements we look for when organizing these events.” said Tyler Wren, founder and director of the Farm to Fork Fondo Series, “It has a wide variety of farms, an engaging community, a great farm to table scene, and beautiful roads for riding.” Participants rode anywhere from 12 to 90 miles, sampling local wine, cheese, fruits and veggies along the way at seven aid stations located at local farms.
The mission of the Farm to Fork Fondo series is to celebrate fitness and local food. By combining cycling and the fresh food of the Finger Lakes region, Farm to Fork Fondo created the ultimate foodie experience. Having aid stations at the farms allowed participants to enjoy the scenic views of New York while learning about where their food comes. “Putting a spotlight on the farms demonstrates the importance of eating locally when you’re living a healthy lifestyle.” said Wren. At the end of the ride, participants joined together for a post ride barbecue featuring live music from the Pelotones and gourmet dishes made with locally sourced ingredients from each of the farms. “This dinner was outstanding in location, wine choices, food, and conversation.” said Rod Taylor, who rode the 50 mile Medio route.
On top of highlighting local farms, the Farm to Fork Fondo series also works to give back to the communities where each of its events are held. The Farm to Fork Fondo - Finger Lakes event gave back to the community by donating money to local causes represented by teams of volunteers. More than $2000 of donations from sponsors, participants, and the raffle ticket sales were donated to the volunteers teams.
Despite some cloudy skies, participants left the event with happy bellies and plans to return next year.
