Farm to Fork Fondo - Vermont cyclists at a gourmet food stop on a local farm

Sunday July, 17 2016

Pittsfield, VT

Over 450 cyclists set out on a farm-to-table bicycle ride through Central Vermont, stopping at nine local farms to refuel with chef-prepared food made with ingredients from the farms. The event, Farm to Fork Fondo – Vermont, is a recreational ride that draws athletes of all abilities. Former Olympians, Tour de France riders, and the Colavita-Bianchi Pro Cycling Team rode alongside a mix of casual and competitive cycling enthusiasts throughout the day.

“A major goal of the Farm to Fork Fondo series is to provide opportunities for the cycling community to support and become better acquainted with the agricultural community, and rural Vermont is the perfect place to do that. These farms are more than just gorgeous scenery. Connected to every beautiful barn are families doing work that is vital to our way of life, and we urge our participants to support local farmers wherever it is they call home,” said event founder, Tyler Wren.

“We are tremendously grateful for the cooperation of all of the communities along our course, and generous support from Riverside Farm and the dozens of local volunteers who helped make this year’s event a great success.”

Farm to Fork Fondo contributed over $3,000 to local non-profit organizations that collectively sent over 60 volunteers to support riders at gourmet aid stations along the course. Participating non-profits included Rutland Area Food and Farm Link, Vermont Farmers Food Center, Vermont Foodbank, Stockbridge Commons Meetinghouse, Ripton Community Church, and the Brandon Boys & Girls Club. Financial support for the contributions was provided by New Holland Agriculture, Rutland Regional Medical Center, and participant donations.

The next edition of Farm to Fork Fondo – Vermont is set to be held July 16, 2017. The remaining two events in the 2016 Farm to Fork Fondo series are in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on Saturday August 6, and Freeport, Maine on Sunday August 28.

About Colavita

A long time ago in the quaint hilltop village of Sant’Elia a Pianisi, located in the Molise region of Italy, two small family businesses were born. One family operated a stone mill for crushing homegrown olives used to produce fine extra virgin olive oil. The other family gathered the durum wheat harvest, milled the wheat into semolina grain and ultimately produced fresh pasta for the local market. Over time, both families became experts at their trade, passing their knowledge to the next generation, who in turn did the same. The two families had much in common not only in perfecting time-honored production methods, but also in name. They were both Colavita families.

Today, the Colavita Olive Oil and Colavita Pasta companies are still family-owned and operating in the same town of their ancestors. They have since joined with another family-owned company, Colavita USA of Edison, New Jersey, and together they have shared the fruits of their respective crafts with American consumers for over twenty years.

Bianchi is the world’s oldest bicycle-manufacturing company, celebrating its 130th anniversary in 2015. The company was founded in Italy in 1885 and throughout its modern era, Bianchi has been associated with legendary Giro d’Italia and Tour de France winners.

Bianchi’s iconic and enduring celeste green color has many stories behind it. One tale spins it as the turquoise color of Milan’s sky, another suggests that it was the eye color of the former queen of Italy for whom Eduardo Bianchi made a bicycle. However it came to be, the color has become the brand’s signature and is worn today by the women of the Colavita | Bianchi Professional Cycling Team.

About Pennings Farm

The Pennings family has a history deeply rooted in farming and agriculture. Jake Pennings began dairy and tulip farming with his 12 brothers and sisters in Holland. At age 18 he took his knowledge of farming and came to the United States where he built his dairy business with wife Johanna and 10 children. After the family sold the dairy farm in 1980 their son Jack Pennings went on to purchase the 100 acre Park Farm in the historic Hudson Valley town of Warwick, NY. Soon after he was joined by his brother Steve and they opened Pennings Orchard, a 25 acre orchard with u-pick apples, pumpkins, cut flowers, vegetables, and a small roadside stand. Since then the brothers have expanded the farm to over 50 acres of orchard and relocated the farm stand to its current location in 1989. Pennings Farm is now two separate operations working together with the same goal of supporting local farms and businesses while keeping the farming tradition alive. The Farm Market is run by Steve and Jill Pennings and their children Steve Jr and Tori, and the Orchard by Jack Jr. and Monica Pennings and their daughters Cameron and Kaelyn.

More information on the volunteer teams and their beneficiaries:

Volunteer Team Green: Orange County Land Trust

The mission of the Orange County Land Trust is to preserve the fields, forests, wetlands, ridgelines and river corridors in and around Orange County, New York, for the benefit of people. The not-for-profit organization has preserved a number of farms in the County including Keith's Farm in Westtown. This means that the beautiful site of the Farm to Fork Fondo aid station at mile 30 will never be developed.

The members of the Orange County Land Trust volunteer team will be competing for funds to help the organization purchase the development rights for more area farms to preserve the county's beautiful open space.

Volunteer Team Orange: Orange County Bicycle Club benefiting the Animal Sanctuary

The Orange County Bicycle Club is a group of recreational enthusiasts that has been wheeling through the Hudson Valley for about twenty years. Members feel there is no better place to be a cyclist than in Orange County with its abundance of of empty roads in a landscape of fields, lakes, pastures and woods.

The club's regular Saturday ride passes a large pasture with herds of grazing camels at the Sanctuary for Animals. These camels, rescued after movie, advertising and circus careers, have become the club's talisman and proceeds from their annual Country Roads Tour benefits the not-for-profit farm. Volunteers from the Orange County Bicycle Club team will compete for additional funds to support the Sanctuary and its beautiful open space.

Volunteer Team Blue: The North Face Store benefiting Pierson Farm Farmstand

The North Face encourages their associates to volunteer their time for worthy causes with paid time off for that purpose. The North Face Outlet Store at Woodbury Commons in Orange County is organizing a team of volunteers to compete on behalf of Pierson's Farms and Greenhouses, hosts of the first Farm to Fork Fondo aid station at mile 16.

Pierson's Farm and Greenhouses is an eighth-generation family beef cattle farm that has diversified in recent years by opening a farm stand that stocks local honeys, jams and treats from other area farms. Funds earned by The North Face volunteer team will be used by Pierson's to expand their farm stand.

Volunteer Team Yellow: Team Palindromes benefiting the Rogowski Farm GoFundMe Campaign

Team Palindromes is a group of Orange County motorcycle enthusiasts with a special affinity for bicycles. Members of the group have been course marshals at major cycling events including the Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. Team Palindromes will be providing on-course moto support and marshaling at the Farm to Fork Fondo and they can be spotted traversing the route by their custom helmet stickers that carry their team slogan, "Fun in Both Directions."

Team Palindromes is volunteering to benefit the GoFundMe campaign for Farm to Fork Fondo aid station Rogowski Farm in Pine Island, New York. In 2011 hurricane Irene and tropical storm wiped out all of Rogowski Farm's crop and much of its infrastructure. The Rogowski family has yet to recover from the disaster and is at risk of losing their farm to creditors.
